I was pretty annoyed that the GTA star cried about getting only $100k on GTA4. He should have asked for more up front, its not the GTA4 was a surprise hit...

This guy did 3-4 episodes on Law and Order over the past 8 years, so starring in GTA4 is a big step up, IMO. I'm sure he'll get a good movie role after this one. Crying the 100k blues will help get him a payoff in his next crappy TV or film role.

@landman: A SEGA fan huh? Comparing first party developers who obviously have financial security vs small studios hoping to make it big is the classic reward vs risk scenario.

They probably got paid pretty well for their efforts.

Drake: thanks for commenting. It is a very debatable issue, but there are a lot of shadiness in the industry regarding bonuses which shouldn't be tolerated.

Thankfully, a lot of bigger companies now have a legitimate bonus plan in place, since attracting and retaining good developers are getting harder.

Very interesting blog, so I'm gonna add support by commenting! I agree with you that if anyone got royalties it should be the developers. On the other hand, as you said, publishers pay for a lot of what goes into making a game. I guess it's a debatable issue. Keep writing!
