They help you name things, so you can talk about design at a higher level of abstraction & reason at a more efficient level. But the fact that you can name something doesn't justify its use as appropriate for a particular situations. Just because I can name all the chords in my song (these are accepted best-practice chords!!!) doesn't make it any good. Design patterns are a lot like guitar chords.
